Subjectively, for me it's Crash 2, because it was the first crash game I got my hands on and share much child memories with.
And also because it adds more mechanics like crouch jump and body slam OwO

It's quite difficult to really give credence to either of those arguments simply because while they're a part of the same game series, they play dramatically differently.
I'm personally much more fond of Crash 1 because it in its essence is much more raw in platforming, and there's not too much beyond that — simplified game mechanics and much more emphasis on precision. Let's also not forget the original challenge of being able to perfect every level with all of the boxes hit as opposed to the relaxed NST rules, too... :p

I prefer Crash Bandicoot 2. It was a mayor improvement over the first game. Crash 2 had excellent graphics, interesting levels, a lot of secrets (like earning the colored gems, or unlocking new entrances/levels). The overall atmosphere and feel was much better for me. I played Crash 1 around the same time I played 2, but 2 is my all time favorite.
After playing Crash 2 is it very difficult going back to Crash 1. Slide jumping, slide spinning, body slamming is a lot more enjoyable than having only jumping and spinning form the original game. N. Sane fixed the crates not saving after every checkpoint, but in the original every level had to be beaten WITHOUT DYING ONCE. Crash 2 (Original) fixed this. Also Crash 2's levels are better designed shorter but fair, compared to Crash 1's stages that drag on for too long and a lot of pits and enemies are poorly placed making the game a lot harder than it should be. Temple ruin stages being high to scale and one missed jump will make you have to climb all the way back up, lord have mercy, Road to Nowhere is also a pain if you don't know about the rope exploit present in both the remake and original, still the game shouldn't have stages that difficult to do. Even the Polar Bear rides were improved over Hog Wild, having obstacles more spread apart.

Them's fightin' words.
I'm an evil scientist, what do you expect? This isn't a game, you know...
